Following the successful raid on the frozen lair of the white dragon of the north, the party pivots to the swampy southland in an attempt to gain some more cohesion and inter-party coordination as they integrate the two newest members.
The tip from Pearsay is about a black dragon living in the swamps that has taken to raiding the southern trade route between Cormyr and Sembia. The party swings into action and spens about a week scouting the swampy area before finding the dragon’s locale. Intelligence reports make note that the dragon uses troops in his attacks, so clearly this is no ordinary beast.
Identifying the nearest troop barracks tells them that they have a limited amount of time to engage the creature before reinforcements might arrive. The wizards teleport the group to the top of the cave opening and the arcane eye is deployed. The dragon’s cave is large and fairly unremarkable – except for the large black dragon resting within,. Protected by the druid’s spells giving them limited immunity to acid, they decide to enter the dragon’s lair and attack it in the middle of the night.
As luck would have it, they find the dragon dozing and although it wakes, the element of surprise afforded to the group is difficult to overcome. The battle is short and savage, but since the group sealed themselves into the cave with a wall of stone, the reinforcements are blissfully unaware that anything has happened. The group plunders the choicest loot and a number of dragon body parts and fluids before setting out to find the medusa that is rumored to be in league with the dragon.
Another day or two of scouting and another deployment of the wizard’s eye, the medusa and medar are found in their cave lair. The place is small, but cozy. The group is troubled by the close quarters that will hamper the use of the most damaging spells, so the druid summons a swarm of insects, and the wizards seal the opening with a wall of stone, trapping the monsters in the midst of the swarm of ravenous insects.
Some time later, the wall is removed and the group enters to pick through the remains before teleporting back to Pearsay, then back to Immersea and the Tormite Mound. Confidence is slowly rebuilding after the disastrous defeat in the mountain temple. There is some idle talk about the future state of things if this ‘Akruel’ death priest is not engaged, but for the moment the party seems content to try and find another adventure somewhat less life threatening.
