The massive door is a momentary roadblock, for Mr. T is immune to poison and Malchor’s Crown blankets the area with a Dispel Magic to suppress any arcane traps. Soon the door is opened and the group is in the bedchambers of the Oathbreaker for whom the tower is named. Much searching and detecting and a sliding panel and a secret journal later the pool of life sucking is turned off. Elulyn maintains his predilection for art theft by slicing a huge painting out of its frame and rolling it up for sale on the secondary market. Most importantly, they score a silver, gem studded chalice which will be needed to open the catacombs.
The group presses on, clearing a training room full of wights, then slaying a few more wights as they poke around. They stumble across a dying treant and create water to help it hydrate. IN return they gain some knowledge about the tower’s history and workings. They methodically move around, encountering vampire spawn, a stone golem, and some gargoyles as they discover a vast chamber on the first floor that houses a corrupted altar, guarded by shadows and vampires. A hasty wall of stone does little to stop the vampire assault, but Cosmic the Acid-Soaked wreaks blind vengeance on those that attack and buys time and space. “One more door!” is the rallying cry and that door reveals additional vampires – though the party’s significant magic is brought to bear and the threat is neutralized in short order.
The group sets out after a short rest to investigate the ruined upper floors of the tower. By means of magic, they become vaporous and spend considerable time investigating the upper reaches of the tower.; They think there is a hidden floor and utilize magical means to gain access by way of passfloor…or is it passroof? Passceiling? A ventilation room with clogged air vents and severed standpipes is revealed. A magical copper ring is found, but nothing more. Time to get back to the business of accessing the catacombs.
Now one door more! A locate object spell indicates there is a sword nearby and it is behind this door! That door reveals a heavily trapped room in which a devil statue holds aloft a sword. Kikkoman says ‘yoink!’ with his telekinesis ring and the party has collected the set. Still…one more door!
That one leads them to interact with a telepathic floating skull that is anchored by a large rock. It dishes the dirt on the tower’s occupants – most of whom the party has already slain by virtue of starting at the top of the tower. It also tells them of a secret scriptorium, which piques Elulyn’s interest and motivates the party towards trying the front doors.
