In the silence that follows Zaal’s killing blow, there is the distant sound of rapidly approaching feet. The group fans out and prepares. Fingers generates an illusion of a Rat Lord and sends it towards the likely avenue of approach while the rest ready spells and missile weapons. The illusion does its job well enough and the pair of running ratbrutes slow to a walk as they approach the image. They recognize the danger just as Zaal’s sleep spell overtakes them and they die at the point of Kegdrain’s blade.
Some quick exploration is undertaken and they find a dwarf’s sleeping quarters. The dwarf in residence is not in residence so they steal as much as they can. They poke through the Ratbrute’s lair (yuck) and find a large waterfall and slippery cavern beyond that. They double back and enter a large newly constructed chapel of sorts. The walls, floor and ceiling are covered in cultist symbols and a large sepulcher occupies the middle of the chamber. The sepulcher pulses with a purple-grey light and the group is understandably nervous. They bypass the room’s centerpiece and open a door on the opposite side of the place. The long hallway ends in a room that contains a waterfall pouring from somewhere in the sewers, judging from the stench. Also in the room are a pair of horrible looking creatures – whether demons, devils or chaos spawn, the group decides to retreat and try to pry open the sepulcher.
Deciding to try and seize the high ground, Bayge tosses the gnome atop the lid – which begins to slide open. Emerging from within are arms, mouths and eyes – in no particular order. The beast that emerges demands adulation and sacrifices – but the group decides to try and kill it instead. They subject it to heavy damage, though they take some in return. Enough so, that they spend another three days holed up in the abandoned dwarf bedroom. Tick…tock…tick….tock. The barbarian army approaches and the group is no closer to finding out where the captive leader may be held.
They emerge from hiding and proceed in the opposite direction from where they first entered and find another assembly of corridors and doors. They pick one at random and are swifty engaged with rubbery tentacles that laskh at them, attempt to rend them and generally impede their progress. Once the tentacles are slain, the dwarf and co. push ahead, up a small flight of stairs and twitch aside a curtain that masks the next room. They are now face to face with a mail-clad medusa. She is slain, but not before Digin becomes statuary. Well now. This poses a serious issue. Maybe Bayga will have to assume the front line position. What shall be done with the axe-wielding statue of short stature? Weighty matters indeed, but might as well look for treasure while it gets mulled over.
