Drifting towards the mithril doors, the group notices an inscription. Magic is detected and the inscription is somewhat of a downer, referencing doom and whatnot. The doors appear to be impervious to the group’s attempts to open them, so an elaborate plan is hatched and powerful magic is used to tunnel through the solid rock off to one side of the doors.
They gain entrance and lay eyes upon the low-slung stone structure that stretches before them. A dock with a rowboat completes the picture – but the group is wary. They spread out and approach the partially opened door. Then two of the party (Kormeier and the Gal) are suddenly turned to stone! Gaaaah! With that a trio of gorgons charges out of the opening, trying to gore party members and petrify them.
The battle rages and it is touch and go for a bit when the Lad gets petrified as well – but the mage sprints off into the darkness and starts unlimbering magic missiles and stone to flesh spells. He and the elf and Kingsley start slaying. Once returned to flesh, the cleric joins in and before too long the beasts are vanquished and the group is restored to flesh. It turns out his was a giant death trap. Striking out into the caverns, the plucky adventurers finally discover a familiar section of underground and swiftly return to the regions of the manticore beach. They explore further and discover stairs and river passages and after exploring them most likely regions, they head back to the scorpion caves. After further investigation, they reach a ledge that is about twenty feet aboive the floor of the cave, so they decide to climb up and see what there is to be seen…
