Bickering to Basilisk

The party bickers over the wisdom of running from the Mage of the middle tower. Reminders of the stone statues enforces the notion to stay away from the wizards lair and it is decided, since the party has come this far, to explore the area they are in. The druid Greenleaf Longbranch voices his disdain for the party exclaiming that all they do is run away from every challenge that comes along. The rest of the party does its best to ignore his constant badgering.

A large cavern is discovered and scrabbling noises are heard within. The party throws in a light coin but naught is revealed. As the intrepid explorers enter the cavern a small troll child crawls into the edges of the light from their coins but is quickly picked up by a large troll arm that melts into the darkness. More scrabbling is heard ahead as if forces are gathering. Max, the druid/mu, removes yet another Fireball Gem from his Helm of Brilliance (3 left) and uses his magic rod to double the damage. The light of the fire reveals many trolls being vaporized. The party continues into the troll lair and is soon confronted by a large female troll accompanied by two smaller male trolls. The female strides forth with a look of contempt in her eyes and her huge breasts swing back and forth like large pendulums. Battle ensues and the Bard is quickly mauled. Two more groups of a female with two males soon join the battle. Greenleaf Longbranch is savaged by several trolls and quickly runs away to heal. Max throws up a circle of fire to prevent more trolls from joining the battle. Many cries of displeasure rise up from the darkness as the fiery wall rises. The party realizes that there are many, many trolls in this cavern. Thud the half-ogre fighter is hit many times due to his lack of any armor besides his shield and is nearly killed. Da’Nog the Barbarian uses his flaming spear of Talos to dispatch many a troll. The party manages to fight of the three sets of trolls and bravely retreats to the entrance from which they came. Max lowers his ring of fire and all quickly run back the way they came.

The party returns to the magic fountain beneath the center tower and bickers about if they should camp or not. A few rounds of healing gets the party 80% healed but all healing spells are used in the process. It is decided to push on into unexplored territory until a suitable place is found to camp.

The Bard finds a room with reverse gravity by stepping into the room and immediately “falling” to the ceiling. The group decides to camp here and uses a rope to climb down to the top. The next morning the group finishes healing up and then climbs to a door on the other side of the room and enters the hallway beyond.

A large room is soon found shrouded in mist. Fears of the basilisk are soon raised. Max casts a fireball into the far corner of the room and a reptilian cry is heard. The party explores and finds a fried giant lizard. In its lair are a magic suit of elfish sized plate mail, a magic gold ring and some melted gold and silver coin. Script is found on the ring and the Bard legend lore’s the writing and finds that it says, “Away” in dwarfish. The Cleric tries on the ring and says “away” in common but nothing happens. No one knows how to say “away” in dwarfish so the powers of the ring are still unknown.

Now that the beast what turns one to stone be dispatched Da’Nog say we head back for the Mage and give him what for. Da’Nog like idea of turning roof to mud into pit then turning mud to rock. If not work maybe at least whole cavern fall in. That be OK with Da’Nog. The only good Mage is a dead Mage but he best Mage is a squishy Mage. Unless he is more Druid than Mage me say.

That was a tough battle with the trolls, which had one party casualty, my trusty sidekick Aria, who btw deserves at least a song to remember her.

    Aria’s Requiem:

As she slips and falls into death’s embrace
a look of anguish doth cloud her face
She boldly joined our band seeking treasure and glory
but alas, a foul troll was the end of her story
And as we journey on thirsting for adventures and redemption
Auditions are now open……for the Mothers of Invention

As soon as we make our way back to Thudheim or Waterdeep, I start looking for another band member. Hopefully, we will avoid the infamous “Spinal Tap Drummer Syndrome” and can find a capable (and lucky) replacement.

Frying the trolls and the basilisk felt good after my minor setback with fire…
The helm of brilliance has been a handy item but I will feel more comfortable when the last of the fire gems have been used.
In my years knowing Greenleaf he has never seemed afraid of a good fight. Especially the destruction of a powerful Mage. Perhaps the Orthan incident has curdled his confidence. Soon he will have to battle another druid for his next level. He will need to regain his confidence or suffer a major experience setback. Thanks Da’Nog, glad I am more druid than Mage. Sure would hate to be a squishy Mage…
Zagig, we come for you… With or without Leafy Green…
