The group camps near the river while Greenleaf scouts the vast cavern as a crow. Just down the river there is an island inhabited by the dark elves (drow) and other nasty evil creatures. The group decides to follow the underground river upstream. Raineer polymorphs into a giant sea turtle and allows Thud to ride on his back. Max turns into an eagle and Orthan rides his carpet with Greenleaf in his pocket as a snake.
The party travels upstream for about an hour before entering a small tunnel of the main river. The passage leads to a maze of narrow underground tunnels. Making there way through the dark the group is surprised by creatures that have three legs and camouflage themselves like the cavern walls. They are very strong and agile. Orthan is killed with one blow. (Good thing he procured that rod of resurrection) Melee ensues and two of the creatures are killed. Searching the dead monsters produces a wood box with 10 cut emeralds, 4000 gold pieces and some travels equipment.
Traveling on the group comes across a room that is full of dead human bodies. There are drag marks on the floor indicating that the bodies had been brought here from another location. Raineer uses his eagle eyes to track the drag marks. On his journey he sees orcs carrying more bodies back through another set of tunnels. After resting the group follows Raineer’s path and finds a cavern that contains an orc stronghold. Deciding that the profit would not be worth the trouble the group heads in the opposite direction.
After several hours of walking the tunnel turns into a smooth stone passage that has a gradual upward slope. Detecting the slope the group hopes this is the right way up to Waterdeep…
What about Thud’s unfortunate role as landing pad for lots of falling stone?

Finally a carriage worthy of my extraordinary fizik! Why I bet the whole world could ride on the back of a giant turtle. Such strength! What grace! and at last a pause to the constant whining over the smell of this and that. how these wusses make it through a day with such delicate sensiblities is more than i can comprehend. there is something about all that book learnin that’ll make you soft. let that be a lesson to you kiddies.
look at poor Orthan. one shot to the head from a wallflower and he crumpled like a parchment. Did I hear an elf cry “RUN!”….again? How DO they find the courage to rise in the morn?
What a crazy maze of unknown. Hopefully the smooth stone passageway is going to produce better progress. Thud took that rock fall pretty good. Though he smells and complains, he’s a good front man-ogre. Takes a smashin and keeps on bashin!
Not the case with the mysterious elf Orthan. Good thing he has that rod of resurrection or this may have been the end of an overly long elf life. Funny that the softness of book learnin has produced a lethal combination of magic that has contributed greatly to Thud’s success. Perhaps this day will bring more success… or more death…
