Wooops.

The morning brings frost and a cold snap, but the afternoon is warm and sunny, so the group carpets to the southernmost island. Upon arriving they make camp near a beach and send out scouts while Dalliance prepares to leave with the booty garnered from the tomb of Hestrin the golem-loving merchant. The scouts return from the first flyover and report the ruins of a large structure and a tower are the only buildings. the island is densely vegetated and there is a pride of lions on the plains. Dalliance teleports back to Waterdeep and the scouts go out for another round of looking. That leaves Humbar, Lubbitch and Reza back at camp.
The scouts return and report that the building ruins must be the destroyed temple of hades and it looks as though the place exploded from the inside, collapsing the roof into the center of the rubble strewn foundations. Plans are laid to explore the temple first and then continue onward to the tower. During the second watch a hurricane sweeps in out of nowhere, blowing Barada and Lubbitch off the island with 150 mph gusts. Humbar hangs on grimly to the shrubbery and tries to hold on. Bud and Reza are enjoying Bud’s tent – which is unaffected by winds of any strength once erected. The bard and fighter are swept over the ocean, but luckliy they each have means of staying aloft and manage to ride out the storm – Barada crashes into a tree and is pinned in a forked branch by the howling wind and Lubbitch manages to crash into a spar that rises out of the waters near the edge of Sentinel Island. A potion of Spider Climb and her considerable strength are sufficient to save her from a watery grave.

When Dalliance teleports back from Waterdeep with the wonderful news that they have found a girdle of strength and a sword of stoning and a rod of cancellation – she finds only three when she expected five.
Eventually though, the bird-bard and the ‘bitch return to the group’s beach and rejoin the party. With a watchful eye skyward, the group re-carpets and decides to fly to the temple ruins. There they spend hours poking about, discovering evidence that there have been others here poking about before them. After more investigation, they decide that there is either nothing of value left in the ruins, or it will require a massive excavation effort to uncover. So, they decide to take advantage of the daylight that is left to go and investigate the tower.

With Bud and Barada in rat form, Humbar pilots the carpet, while Reza, Dalliance and Lubbitch keep an eye on the landscape. They note that the tower is old and slime-covered. There is a door at ground level and a trap-door in the roof. The tower sits atop the highest point in the vicinity and the terrain is devoid of any brush or cover, leaving a burnt clear zone about 500 yards around the structure.
Interesting…

Suddenly a fireball engulfs the carpet! The craft disintegrates into a mass of flaming fibers and plummeting party members. Reza is saved by Dalliance, who uses a levitation cloak to stop her own descent. Barada is protected by a ring of feather falling, and Lubbitch deploys her wings of flying, but rat-Bud and Humbar fall the 100 feet to the stony ground. Humbar doies and Bud barely survives the impact. Dalliance erects a globe of invulnerability while the group tries to regroup.
Reza goes to find Humbar’s corpse and Lubbitch lands on the slope nearby. A second fireball detonates and slays Lubbitch, but Dalliance is protected. Magic missiles strike Reza, but his ring of spell turning sends most of them back to the mage that created them – Surprise! The group charges the tower as a skeletal figure appears on the roof and a large swath of stone turns to mud.

‘LICH!’ screams Dalliance as her globe of invulnerability melts away.
She fires off an undeath to death spell that seems to have no effect.
Barada uses a stored teleport spell to gain access to the roof of the tower and attempts to backstab the undead – which also has no effect on the projected image. Barada looks for the real lich while the rest of the group gets close to the base of the tower. Dalliance’s dispel magic is useless and she prepares Reza with a flying spell while she prepares to teleport to the tower roof. Meanwhile, Barada has been lightning bolted by the lich and things are starting to look a little grimmer than originally planned. As the group groups atop the tower, the lich vanishes. Dalliance uses her detect invisibility spell, but to no effect it seems. The group goes to open the trap door, which is well named, as it explodes in a gout of flame and embers. As the flames rage, hailstones from an ice storm spell pelts the tower roof.
The group enters the building and finds themselves in a large prison/torture chamber complex. The only living occupant is a human male, about two-thirds peeled, strapped to a table. The group ignores him and looks for some way downwards into the tower. None is found, so they return to the roof. A hurried conversation convinces them that it might be better to fall back and regain strength rather than pursuing the assault. As Bud and Barada turn into bird form and fly off to the lair on Sentinel Island, Dalliance and Reza return to the ground floor to regain the bodies of their fallen comrades before departing, but all they find are tiny scattered bits of pale dust…they have been disintegrated!

Shaken, Dalliance teleports Reza and herself back to meet the birds.
They discuss the options and decide to try and send an envoy to Waterdeep to plead for more assistance in their quest. They also seek another fighter to replace Lubbitch, but time is short and they cannot afford to tarry too long else the weird weather will engulf the North.
Grim.

  • Dalliance  says:

Ugghh worst plan ever. Poor poor Lubbitch and Humbar… not to mention our precious carpet! Shall we resurrect the ashes of what may or may not be our fallen comrades? Time is of the essence and it may be that we can only find hasty replacements. Off to Waterdeep! Perhaps we can play through some of it in the intervening week?Don’t suppose there is a wish spell lying around?

  • Lubbitch  says:

    POOF!

  • Reza  says:

A tragic waste! Without a cleric we are in trouble …..a better plan next time couldn’t hurt either!

  • Humbar  says:

    Death in battle! Glorious!
