Obelisk? Where’s Asterix?

Leaving the village stockade the group journeys through the forest and returns to the mine. They beeline to the hidden door and spend two days traveling along the rough hewn corridor, then find the secret door at the journey’s end. Opening the door reveals a pulsing green obelisk surrounded by a pool of green viscous liquid. The cleric detects a trap and the mage detects strong magic. The group pulls back and lets the mage try and deal with it. A few dispel magic spells later, both magic and trap are suppressed. An ice wall over the pool lets the group proceed.
They encounter a bunch of larvae, egg sacs and full grown death moths. They set the room ablaze and slay the creatures with a minimum of trouble...

Mushroom mushroom! Snaaaaake its a snaaaaake…

Slaying the noisy shrooms, the group waits for a bit to see if anyone comes calling. After a few minutes have passed, they venture onward and find themselves in a high-ceilinged cavern of sorts. Within seconds it becomes clear that this is some sort of spider lair. It isn’t too hard to figure out, given that huge spiders begin raining out of the sky onto the cleric and company. The spiders are dispatched swiftly and exploration is undertaken. A bit of looping around and finding out that passages meet sets them on the final lap of investigation.
Strange monsters are slain, and the blood-drained husks of missing people from the village are found. It turns out that one of the corpses is the local cleric of Freya. Of the missing ranger, there is no sign.

Will you be mine?

After meeting with the village sheriff, the group learns of the bizarre attackers that have ravaged the countryside.Tales of misshapen giants and orc-like creatures are mingled with report of strange skull headed, tentacle-lined moths that swoop down to snatch unsuspecting villagers and haul them away. They have managed to fell one of the creatures and report that when it hit the ground it burst into a patch of pitch black toadstools with a decidedly unhealthy appearance. The local ranger has been missing for a few weeks and a couple of days ago, the chief constable, the village cleric of Freya and a handful of stout farmers set out to see what had become of him. None have returned so far and the mood in the enclosure is a bit panicky.

Standing Stoned

After hiding out for a day, the group decides to enter the caverns again to try and destroy the Abyssal themed standing stones. A divination spell is cast by the cleric and the resulting information is interpreted to mean that there is a tunnel from the caverns to the Realm of the Wailing Fog – located many miles to the southwest. The stone wall is transformed into flesh and the polymorphed wizard chews through it in weasel form. The rest of the group is changed to gaseous form and wafts into the caverns beyond. After regaining corporeal form, the set about investigating the area around the standing stones. The remnants of a magic circle are seen inside the stones and there is quite a bit of mental energy devoted to discussing how to destroy them...

Caverns and Demons and Divination – oh my.

Investigating further the group revisits the cavern and investigates further. The standing stones are rune carved and are investigated by the party members. Various schemes are discussed but in the end none are successful…

The area surrounding the demon stones is investigated and many dead ends are discovered and investigated. An altar is found and the splayed, flayed body is displayed upon it. A stack of desiccated bodies are found nearby. Investigations are carried out, and priestly divinations are found to indicate that a different area should be investigated.
